A Field Tour, a Leading Approach

His Highness, Vice President, State’s Prime Minister and Governor of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s surprising inspection tour to some work sites in Dubai is not the first of its kind and certainly not the last, God willing. Such visits are a continuum to a leading approach of work that is characterized by transparency, credibility and treatment of mistakes without coverage or denial of the negatives that could be produced by any administrative work worldwide.

The tour, which was largely covered by the media, reflects in one of its manifestations a consolidation to the values of serious work and a directly diligent follow-up. Given that this follow-up is an effective element in the success, efficiency and excellence of the governmental work, it sends a clear message to managers in all sectors to watch over their employees to ensure that citizens receive quality services.

It is evident that the UAE’s smart government is betting largely on excellence, creativity and innovation in the performance of its services in various sectors throughout the country, which brings to light the need to implement other elements to achieve this competitive level. In doing so, close monitoring to work is considered mandatory for its consolidation to the model of discipline and the perfect performance of one’s job.

Transparency and inspection of others’ errors, serious or otherwise, are one of many excellence keys to the Emirates development experience. Our leadership’s vision targets not only success, but also global competitiveness that requires a high degree of accuracy, creativity and innovation standards. Therefore; getting rid of pitfalls is considered normal and one of the fundamentals of daily work.

His Highness tour to a number of governmental work sites was not for pictures, or else it could have been enough to advertise typical images used by most officials in the Arab world, but his tour’s main objective was to detect errors and disadvantages to document and report the necessary ‘takeaways’ to the administrative officials in different positions. As mentioned, this is not a new or an updated tour, it is an ongoing approach of the leadership adopted by the UAE since its foundation.

This approach was first founded by late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who was known for his open-door policy, which aims at monitoring how work is carried out with direct officials on a daily basis. There was no cover or mediator between him and working officials. There are hundreds of stories documenting the founding father’s open-door policy. Thanks to his sons, this approach still persists.

His highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Army’s Supreme Commander’s Deputy, is accustomed to follow-up work process and ask for details, which played a major role in the success and excellence of our development experience. Bureaus of officials and governors are open to all citizens, as it is known and concrete to everyone. Our leadership’s style represents a unique style in its relation with its loyal people.

His highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s approach to the accurate and transparent supervision of the daily work comes as no surprise. As head of our smart government and leader of Dubai’s renaissance, he has accomplished enormous achievements in terms of the improvement of competitiveness indicators on the international level. It’s normal that a leader with this firmness and concern for the public interest issues immediate decisions to hold accountable senior officials failing to perform their duties adequately.

This firm will to take responsibility and perform duties with full efficiency and discipline is what the UAE needs in coming years; this is the message his Highness wanted to convey during his tour and the firm decisions that characterized it. His tour has turned into an important lesson that cannot be matched by dozens of resolutions and instructions which can be issued to generate the same meanings.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum emphasized yesterday the next period’s need of a new thinking, a new blood and different ideas for a new development era with growing challenges, widening ambitions and raising expectations. The aim behind this all is ‘to promote our citizens’ living standards and the services provided to them’ according to his Highness.

One might ask, doesn’t Emirates enjoy tremendous excellence in terms of living standards and public services? The answer is yes, and international official indicators are the best witness of that, but the UAE is aiming high, our wise leadership, led by his Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, head of state’s ambitions are limitless. Competitiveness and the obtainment of a global antecedence seat in the maximum areas of development is our goal, which is worthy of more efforts and serious work.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum says that ‘Governmental duty is a lifetime service to people. The Emirates was founded by a group of people who devoted themselves to their homeland, because they saw Zayed and Rashid devoting their nights and days, mornings and evenings for the sake of Emirates’ adding that ‘we want you always active, we want you to come up with new ideas, we want you to keep learning and have a strong determination, because big challenges need big minds, and those desiring first standings, must earn them’.

Global antecedence is our goal; such a precious goal is worthy of our efforts and time. Preserving the name and the flag of the Emirates present among nations and peoples of the world is a goal which this generation of our great leaders is striving to achieve. We as citizens share with them their ambitions and dreams, we are as excited and ambitious about this national goal as they are.
