On the Green March Speech of the King of Morocco

In the Kingdom of Morocco, the patriotic Green March is remembered annually. It was an epic where the loyal and freedom-loving nation made history.
As loyalism and human values fade away, we get feelings of rootlessness. So, in today’s globalized world, the new generations need to remember their history.
The speech of His Majesty King Mohammed VI on the anniversary of the Green March conveyed that. It was the speech of deep wisdom, understanding the current international relations of the world—the same wisdom and discernment with which the Kingdom of Morocco faced the hardships that the whole Arab region have been through. Through the past few years, the leadership, the government and the people stood united in strong national unity, faithful to the values of the nation and the State. It mattered to them to safeguard their gains as a country, after long years of anti-colonial struggles.
This historical speech also addressed the neighbors, shared history and the common destiny of the Maghreb nations. “We also realize that our peoples’ interests are best served by our unity, integration and complementarity. There is actually no need for third-party mediation.” Division and dispute is no longer in the interest of Morocco or Algeria.
The Moroccan leadership is not only known for being honest and not economical with the truth but also aware of the strategic interests of nations. “We must be realistic,” the King said, “and admit that the state of our bilateral relations is not normal, much less acceptable.” His Majesty also offered alternatives to deal with this odd situation, declaring his country’s readiness for direct and frank dialogue with Algeria, “in order to settle the transient and objective differences impeding the development of relations” because no mediation is needed between brothers.
The speech also defined a clear mechanism to overcome stalemate with direct dialogue between agreed-upon representatives of the two countries, “in good faith and in a very frank, objective and honest way, using an open-ended agenda, without conditions or exceptions.” Through this mechanism, the countries can overcome their disagreements, once and for all, something shallow and temporary solutions can’t do.
HM the King quoted Prophet Muhammad PBUH, “[Angel] Gabriel recommended so persistently that He treat neighbors well that He thought he would give them a share of the inheritance.” Wise leaders who were inspired by the rightful prophet value the interests of their people who are aspiring for a better tomorrow. They also feel concerned about the ripple of unfortunate events that have been going on in the Arab region, from conflicts to wars, not to mention modern-day tartars. The brutal terrorist organizations that emerged and were defeated in Syria and Iraq are looking for new places to go.
The Prophet of Islam wisdom said that wisdom is sought by the faithful. People’s interests are priorities of the wise. It transcends differences. May the King’s speech open minds in the Maghreb and the glorious Green March forever remain in the hearts and minds of our brothers in Morocco.
