In the Same Foxhole: The UAE–Saudi Alliance

When the political leaders of two countries are in the same foxhole, they are talking about real unity, strong bonds, common interests and shared destiny. In a recent visit to the Kingdom, HH Sh. Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan (Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces) chose the right time to express the deep ties between the two nations. Out of bad intentions, some regional actors exerted negative influence on the two-state alliance. They have been exploiting the current changes to cause division between the Arab World’s strongest partners.

In recent years, the UAE-Saudi alliance turned into a long-term strategic collaboration. His Highness the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi has said that “The UAE will always remain in the same foxhole with its Saudi brothers because it has absolute faith in shared goals and destiny.”

It is no longer about temporary or tactical objectives, such as the Yemen crisis, but an extending strategy in the face of any existing or potential threats.

The joint vision is shared by the leaders of the two Arab countries. The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud praised the close relations between the two nations. He expressed to HH Sh. Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan his wishes of well-being and more prosperity for the UAE.

The Kingdom and the Emirates have had a joint vision of the sources of threat to Gulf and Arab security since 2011. If it wasn’t for the two countries effectively moving in several regional fronts, the Arab region would have faced another wave of chaos, disintegration and collapse, eventually leading to another geopolitical reality. His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan affirmed that bilateral relations arose from a common awareness of the nature of regional and international variables requiring wise and consistent decision-taking. He expressed his confidence that the Kingdom will keep assuming this role in order to maintain Arab interests.

The UAE–Saudi comprehensive cooperation has helped promoting development, prosperity and stability in the region. The two countries have been converging in terms of development trajectories. Saudi Vision 2030, started by HH Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, and UAE 2021 and UAE 2071 are strategic visions that would bring a complete makeover in the Gulf region. The crown prince of Abu Dhabi said that the two countries’ alliance will make way for progress and development for the peoples of the region.

The Kingdom and the Emirates generally agree on regional and international issues, as affirmed by His Highness the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi. “The relations between the two close countries are a model of bilateral relations and an example of common awareness of the regional and international variables to be managed through wise and consistent policies and positions.”

The alliance remained strong in the face of chaos and conspiracies. In this sense, they have been in the same foxhole. But the sons of the UAE and Saudi Arabia are actually in the same foxholes in the southern front, fighting to defend their Yemeni brothers.

The visit came to reiterate that the alliance is strong, a slap in the face of plotters in Doha, Iran and elsewhere. It was a response to these hateful conspirators, that the UAE and Saudi Arabia will stay united against every threat and through any challenge to their alliance, the Gulf and Arab people.
